Barriers to Participation

A club should consider barriers to participation before trying to recruit new members. This will ensure your recruitment strategies are effective and your club is inviting and inclusive.

Some barriers could be:

  • Lack of knowledge on how to play
  • Lack of time with school, work, or other sport commitments
  • Registration is too expensive
  • Friends play other sports
  • Poor swimming ability
  • Fear of injury
  • Ridged program offerings
  • Poor club reputation

Once you have identified barriers to participation, determine measures to overcome the barriers and drive participation.

More about barriers to participation can be found on the Aus Sport website.
