2024 AUSTRALIAN YOUTH WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 3 WRAP

Published Mon 08 Jan 2024

Marking the official halfway point of the week one competition, day three of the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships saw junior teams leave it all in the pool.

With more than 210 teams from three countries bringing their A-game to the largest edition of the event in its history, competition is well and truly heating up.

Young gun from Western Australia, Angus Payne is loving the community feel of the Championships and enjoying his time in Brisbane.

“The best part about the Championships is that everyone comes together and plays at such a high skill level. You get to put all that training and hard work into practice over a full week and see how it all plays out, and everyone is really supportive,” said Payne.

“My favourite part about the week is just being together as a team, we’ve had some kids from other places come and join us and they’ve been really good and fun, so it’s been really nice getting to know everyone and coming together as a team.

“Brisbane is also really amazing, I’ve never been here before but it’s so green and so cool. It’s been such a fun place to travel to!”

For those travelling from the southern states, the Championships are not only a great chance to play water polo against teams from around the world, but to experience playing in the Brisbane climate.

For Jade Hoffmann and the South Australia U14 team, the weather has contributed to team enjoyment and success.

“We did really well today and had heaps of fun. We won our first game 21-0 and also won our second game, so we were really happy about how we did,” said Hoffmann.

“I really like the climate in Brisbane, it’s really nice weather here. It’s so windy and cold where we’re from so to come and play here has been such a cool experience. Even if it’s overcast it’s still nice and warm.

“The weather has also made it really easy to get up early and make the most of the day. It just gives me really good vibes and makes me feel really good and hyped.

“This whole event has been a really good experience generally, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone cause they’re all so nice and it’s just been so fun to play with them,” she said.
