Australian Teams named for FINA World League Inter-Continental Cup in Perth

Published Mon 25 Mar 2019

Water Polo Australia (WPA) has named the Australian men’s and women’s water polo teams that will compete at the 9 nation men’s and women’s FINA World League Inter-Continental Cup, beginning in Perth tomorrow.

The Aussie Sharks (men’s) and Aussie Stingers (women’s) squads were narrowed to 15 person sides, following a week of staging camps in Perth.

The Sharks team boasts two sets of brothers – Western Australian duo George and Andrew Ford and New South Wales based pair Blake and Lachlan Edwards. Also hailing from the West is local up and coming player Tim Putt.

The Stingers team includes Perth Olympian Zoe Arancini, Fremantle goal keeper Lilian Hedges and Jessica Zimmerman, who currently plays for the Italian Club Rapallo.

WPA High Performance Manager Aleksandr Osadchuk said the Aussies have an important task ahead of them.

“Our teams will be aiming to qualify for the FINA World League Super Final and we also have the FINA World Championships to prepare for,” Osadchuk said.

The tournament is also an important step on the path to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“There’s a lot at stake at this event as it also forms part of our Olympic pre-qualification.

“We are pleased that a number of Australia’s international players were able to make themselves available for the tournament and we expect both the Sharks and Stingers to be competitive throughout the week.

“Equally great is the number of emerging players who get an opportunity to get international playing experience.

“We’re looking forward to a tough week of competition against some of the world’s best water polo teams and we encourage everyone to come along and support our athletes.

Perth has a proud water polo history and is a great host city,” Osadchuk said.
