Australian Waterpolo League teams head west for Round Four

Perth fans are in for a treat this weekend as round four of the OVO Australian Waterpolo League will see both UWA Torpedoes and Fremantle host rivals from the east coast including ACU Cronulla Sharks and Sydney Uni Lions.

The OVO feature game of the week will see UWA Torpedoes go head to head with ACU Cronulla Sharks on Sunday 16 January, live streamed on OVO Play APP and website.

The UWA Torpedoes are looking forward to hosting their first game of the season, which will take place in their new home pool at HBF Stadium Aquatic Facility.

UWA Men’s Head Coach Damian Kelly said after a successful start to the season and good results from the round three roadtrip, his side are excited to play at their new home ground

“We had some good results on the road last week against Hunter (Hurricanes) and Queensland (Thunder) but we’re looking forward to playing Cronulla this weekend,” Kelly said.

“They’ve got a similar team dynamic to us, but we'll be watching out for their Japanese imports who are proving to be their danger men.”

UWA and Cronulla men are separated by only one championship point on the OVO AWL ladder so this weekend’s game could shake up the competition.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge of this weekends’ game and in many respects I think it’ll be a very important game for us,” Kelly said.

“But for us we need to focus on the process rather than the end result and whatever the outcome ins will be a product of the hard work that everyone has put in to get there,” he said.

Round four will also double as Pride Round, celebrating diversity and inclusion within water polo right across the country

Pride in Sport’s National Program Manager Beau Newell said that initiatives like Pride Round set a great example.

“Many of Australia’s sporting organisations, including Water Polo Australia, are taking the positive steps needed to ensure your sexuality, gender identity and experience does not impact your ability to play, watch or be involved with sport at any level,” Newell said.

“Water Polo Australia is a founding member of Pride in Sport, with the partnership specifically designed to assist with the inclusion of employees, players, volunteers and spectators with diverse sexualities and genders,” he said.

“While inclusion has well and truly made its way onto the Australian workplace diversity and inclusion agenda, there is more to be done to ensure that sport in Australia can experience greater levels of LGBTQ+ inclusion.”

The UWA Torpedoes-ACU Cronulla Sharks game will be streamed LIVE on OVO Play or can be watched via the OVO Play App from 1:00pm AEDT on Sunday 16 February.
