After competing for their respective Clubs last week at the 2020 KAP7 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, the Born 02 Women’s squad put their States rivalries aside to come together for a training camp in Brisbane.

The 33-person squad have been training together twice a day this week, with scrimmage matches against Queensland Thunder OVO Australian Water Polo League team each night.

Head coach Philip Bower said even though the camp has been intense, the girls have all stepped up to the occasion.

“This week has been exactly what we’ve needed, we’ve had the whole squad together and plenty of pool time,” Bower said.

“It was a great time to get the girls altogether seeing as they were already in Brisbane, and to have the opportunity to watch the Aussie Stingers and KAP7 Aussie Sharks was fantastic,” he said.

Drummoyne Devils’ Maeve Ryan said watching the Aussie Stingers was exactly the motivation she needed before heading into camp.

“We got to speak to a few of the girls after their game on Saturday and it really put into perspective the hard work that they have put in to get where they are,” Ryan said.

“And they’re coming up to the Olympic Games, so it was really motivating to me because that’s what I want to do and that’s what I want to achieve,” she said.

Victoria’s Karly Flahive said the camp has provided the squad with lots of new experiences.

“The camp has been really good this week and we’ve learnt a lot together as a squad,” Flahive said.

“We’re all pretty excited as we build towards the World Championships but we’re pretty nervous as well,” she said.

“At this selection camp we’ve all been trying to do our best to see if we can make the team, but at the end of the day we all just want what’s best for each other.”

Additional training camps will be held for the Born 02 Women squad, ahead of their World Championships in Netanya, Israel in September 2020.
