The Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame recognises those individuals who have made an exceptional contribution over an extended period of time to water polo as a player, administrator, coach, referee or in another capacity.

WPA is pleased to announce the well known and highly respected coach Ian Trent will be inducted into the Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame.

Trent has a wealth of knowledge and experience, having coached at all levels of the game, but it is as coach of the Australian Women’s Water Polo Team where he made his mark. Trent coached the team between 1983 until 1988, during which time the team enjoyed a three-year unbeaten stretch highlighted by an historic gold medal victory at the inaugural World Championships for women in Madrid, Spain in 1986, to this day it is the only world title won by a senior Australian women’s team.

Trent’s influence on the game spans club, school and university water polo. In 1988, Trent was at the forefront of establishing Australia’s first national junior water polo program.

The former player turned coach has been involved with Sydney Uni Water Polo since the 1970s. During this time, he has dedicated himself to more than 20 NSW teams, both boys ang girls competing at junior and senior level. His coaching record boasts 21 Sydney L1 Premierships and 10 Australian Club Championships. He guided the Sydney Uni Women’s team to a National League bronze medal in 2014 and played an integral part of the club’s back-to-back premiership wins in 2016 and 2017.

Trent has also served as Head Coach at Drummoyne Water Polo Club, Newington College and various Independent Girls’ schools.

As a popular commentator, Trent offers expert and tactical analysis as host of the ‘Whistle Blower’. He was also an expert commentator at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
