In the cage with KAP7 Aussie Sharks Lachy Edwards

Lachy Edwards has been part of the KAP7 Aussie Sharks squad for a number of years now, notching up nearly 100 caps for his country.

Having recently returned from a stint in Spain, Lachy’s focus is now cemented on making his Olympic debut in Tokyo later this year.

With the lack of international competition due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the KAP7 Aussie Sharks have had a number of NSWIS juniors training alongside them, something that Edwards is appreciative of.

“It’s great to have so many young boys training with us day in, and day out. It’s great to have the numbers to play against in training as we prepare for the Tokyo Olympics,” Edwards said.

“Having the extra time (due to postponed Olympics) has meant we’ve been able to solidify what we’ve been practicing, and what we were ready for last year. Now we’re getting ready to put it into play this year at the Olympics,” he said.

With the delayed Olympics, Edwards relished the opportunity to head overseas, where he played for Spanish club CE Mediterrani.

“Spain was good, it was good to play some high quality water polo - we had the Spanish League and the European League qualifier so we played some pretty good, high quality water polo,” Edwards said.

“I probably got to do a bit more shooting outside, so that was good practice. They’ve got so many players to play with and against, so it’s always good practice,” he said.

With the Tokyo Olympics on the horizon, Edwards has landed back in Australia, just in time for the recent KAP7 Cup.

“It’s good to be back home in Australia. I'm happy to be back and close to all my family and friends again,” Edwards said.

“It was disappointing that the Australian Waterpolo League couldn’t go ahead in Brisbane, but it’s great that the KAP7 Cup was able to be pulled together so quickly for us to be able to get some games in.

Edwards scored five goals across the weekend of the KAP7 Cup for his Drummoyne Devils team, helping them to the final. Unfortunately going down to Sydney Uni in the last quarter, 11-14.
