ORD MINNETT AUSSIE SHARKS AND AUSSIE STINGERS 2024 WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS CAMPAIGN GETS UNDERWAY THIS WEEKEND

Published Fri 02 Feb 2024

With less than 180 days to go until the Paris Olympic Games, the Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers have arrived in Doha ahead of the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.

Set to get underway on 2 February through until 18 February, the 2024 World Aquatics Championships will offer the opportunity for both the Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers to gain valuable international competition experience on their path to Paris.

Although both squads have already secured their place at this year’s Games, there will be a lot on the line for some of their opponents with the final tickets to Paris up for grabs.

The Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers have been drawn Group C with Hungary, Singapore and New Zealand, three countries which have not yet secured their Olympics berth.

Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers captain Zoe Arancini said it will make for some good competition for her team.

“I think Hungary are an interesting opponent because they are quite strong. They’ve got some good centre forwards, outside shooters and they are a good counter attacking team,” Arancini said.

“They’ve also still got to qualify for the Olympics, so they’ll be fighting hard for that spot, and it’ll be a good match up for us to see where we’re at.

“Playing against New Zealand is never an easy game either - they always make you work for it, so that’ll be a good game as well.

“And then we’ve got Singapore - we had a training camp with them prior to the last World Championships so we know what we can expect from them,” she said.

Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks co-captain Nathan Power said his team are looking to continue the form they set up against Japan in the Ord Minnett Test Match Series in January.

“We’re feeling really good - we’ve had a good preparation since early December and we’ve also had some great match ups and training competitions (with both Japan and the USA) since then,” Power said.

“We’ve had the chance to settle here in Doha now, the spirits are high in the team and everyone is wanting the competition to start because it’s very exciting what’s ahead of us.

“We got a lot out of our training camp with the USA here in Doha, and we’re definitely better off heading into our first match up against Croatia now.

“We’re a hungry, competitive group of guys who want to win. Looking towards our group we’ve got the two best teams from the last European Championships.

“But we’re hungry to get in there and prove ourselves. And we’ve also got South Africa which will be another tough game,” he said.
