The 2024 Australian Waterpolo League season is now in full swing, with the first weekend of competition offering plenty of exciting water polo action at several pools across the country.

Fremantle Mariners/Marlins v UWA Torpedoes

In the ultimate west coast clash, the Fremantle Mariners and Marlins met with cross town rivals UWA Torpedoes in Round 1 of the Australian Waterpolo League.

A close game saw the UWA Men triumph 8-7, with the team sharing the scoring between six players.

The Women’s clash was one for the ages, with Glencora McGhie scoring four goals and ultimately sealing the deal for the Fremantle Marlins who recorded a 9-7 win.

UTS Balmain Tigers v Sydney Uni Lions

With both games broadcast live on Kommunity TV, traditional rivals UTS Balmain Tigers and Sydney Uni Lions went head to head at the Dawn Fraser Baths on Saturday.

The Sydney Uni Lions delivered a convincing 13-8 win over their rivals, with Billy Miller scoring four goals.

Balmain triumphed in the Women’s game, the end score 8-6.

ACU Cronulla Sharks v UNSW Wests Magpies/Killerwhales

In the Men’s competition, the UNSW Wests Magpies beat their rivals 15-8, with Olympian Jarrod Gilchrist pushing his team to the front with five goals.

A closer game in the Women’s saw the UNSW Killerwhales clinch a win, beating the Sharks 8-7 at the Sutherland Leisure Centre.

Hunter Hurricanes v Drummoyne Devils

The Drummoyne Devils triumphed in Newcastle, with their Men’s team winning 13-9. Tristan Glanznig was a standout performer, scoring six points in the away game.

The Devils also proved too big of a challenge for the Hunter Hurricanesteam in the Women’s competition, winning 15-8 at Lambton Pool.

Fremantle Mariners v FYFE Adelaide Jets

The hometown advantage proved true on Saturday and Sunday in games between the Fremantle Mariners/Marlins and the FYFE Adelaide Jets.

The Fremantle Men secured an 18-11 point win on Saturday, followed by a 20-5 point win on Sunday.

The Women’s scoreline was equally as convincing, with Saturday's game delivering a final scoreline of 20-6 before the Marlins backed it up on Sunday with a 20-3 win.

UWA Torpedoes v Griffith University Queensland Thunder

Four games took place between the UWA Torpedoes and traveling Griffith University Queensland Thunder over the weekend.

A close game on Saturday saw the UWA Torpedoes secure the points, winning 5-4 in the Men’s game. Sunday’s game saw the tide turn, with the Queensland team winning 7-5.

The Griffith University Queensland Thunder Women sealed the deal in both games over in the West, securing a 8-7 win on Saturday and a 15-11 win on Sunday.

UNSW Wests Magpies/Killerwhales v UTS Balmain Tigers

The UNSW Wests Magpies continued their weekend winning streak on Sunday, defeating the UTS Balmain Tigers 14-11 in Sydney. Nicolas Constantin-Bicari scored a massive six individual goals, sealing the deal for the team.

On the opposite foot, the UTS Balmain Tigers Women’s team backed up their first win with a second on Sunday against the Killerwhales, 14-9.

Sydney Uni Lions v Hunter Hurricanes

In the Men’s competition, the Sydney Uni Lions delivered another strong win in Sunday’s game against the Hunter Hurricanes, with seven players contributing to the final score of 17-7.

Also at the Peter Montgomery Pool, the Sydney Uni Lionesses secured their first win of the season, dominating in the pool to secure a 19-4 win against the Hunter Hurricanes women.

Drummoyne Devils v ACU Cronulla Sharks

In two of the final matches of the weekend, the Drummoyne Devils left it all in their home pool against the ACU Cronulla Sharks.

The Men won 11-9 while the Women’s game saw a final scoreline of 10-5 falling in favour of Drummoyne
