2024 AUSTRALIAN YOUTH WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 4 WRAP

Published Tue 09 Jan 2024

The penultimate day of week one at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships saw teams give it their all, with a spot in the finals on the line for some.

With teams travelling from around the world to attend the event, bonding with new and existing friends has been a highlight of the week for many.

For Leon Vidal from Victoria, playing at the Championships is something he would recommend to anyone.

“The whole team has bonded really well since being here, we’re not just a team, we’re a family now,” said Vidal.

“We had our first win today and the whole team was really happy about it. We’ve been getting really close but just missing out, so today’s result has really encouraged us to keep working hard.

“Teams should absolutely come to this event, it’s a really good experience even if you don’t win. Along the way you learn so many new things, regardless of if you win or lose, and build up your confidence for next time,” he finished.

U14 athlete Halle Elphick from Western Australia has also enjoyed becoming closer with her teammates while away from home.

“It’s been really great having so much bonding time with the girls, they’re all really fun,” said Elphick.

“This experience has really brought us together as a team because we’re away from our families and have been enjoying the experience together but also leaning on each other for support, so I definitely feel closer to everyone now.

“I was a bit nervous for the first few games but after the first few we really got into a groove, got into the games and even won a couple which was really fun. The girls have been there for each other through all of it, that’s definitely been a highlight,” she said.

Currently undefeated leading into tomorrow's final, Reef Potter from New South Wales has flourished amongst the high level of competition at the Championships.

“We had a long drive up from Sydney but it’s all been worth it and hopefully it will pay off even more with a grand final win. Regardless of the result, it’s been great to get to know the boys, spend time with them and have a fun time all around,” said Potter.

“The boys have played really well so far, we’ve combined really well, put shots away, communicated well and listened, and we’ve generally had a really good tournament so far, so we’re looking forward to the rest of it,” he said.

In the 18&U Girls semi final, Brisbane cross town rivals Polo Bears Ice and Mermaids Pink went head to head in front of a packed crowd at Musgrave Pool.

Mermaids were eager to book their spot in the gold medal playoff to defend their title. But Polo Bears Ice were on a mission to secure a finals berth and took the game to the wire, eventually getting a one point victory, 11-10.

For young gun Ali McCarthy, she said the team were thrilled and she’s so pleased to be back playing at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

“It’s really exciting, it just feels really good,” she said post match.

“I have played the AYC every year, it’s really good to have all the teams come together from like Sydney, WA, there are some New Zealand teams, American teams…playing against teams you don’t normally get to play against is good.

“This is the first year she [mum, Noami] is coaching me so it’s going pretty good so far,” she said.
