Round 2 of the OVO Australian Waterpolo League has wrapped up with UNSW Wests and ACU Cronulla Shark teams taking centre stage in OVOPlay’s feature match of the round.
The Sharks men’s side squared off against the Magpies in a dramatic draw at the end of a penalty shootout, leaving the sharks men still searching for their first 2018 AWL victory.
Sharks player, Nick Brooks scored a clutch goal with 43 seconds remaining to draw the scores level for the first time in the match at 7 all sending the game into penalty shootouts.
Neither side was able to successfully complete their five shots, leaving both teams on 11 goals a piece to share the points.
In the OVOPlay women’s match, the UNSW Wests Killer Whales took on the ACU Cronulla Sharks.
The killer whales’ strong defensive efforts earnt them their first 2018 AWL competition win, defeating the Sharks 7-4.
Recent addition to the UNSW Killer Whalers, Ash Southern has enjoyed settling into her new team.
“I am really excited to be part of the Whales team and looking forward to building on our strengths after this win,” she said.
“I think we can take some confidence from our defence, keeping a team to four goals is pretty good,” said Southern.
Meanwhile at the the Drummoyne Derby Day it was the Sydney University Lions who were too good in both the men’s and women’s competitions for their inner city rivals.
The Lions women won a hard fought 10-8 match, whilst their male counterparts had a bit more breathing space against the devils, running out 10-6 victors.
ADELAIDE
With a home ground advantage the Adelaide Jets men’s team ran out 9-7 winners against the UTS Balmain Tigers in the first of their two matches.
In the return match Balmain closed the gap but still could not get over the line, narrowly edged out 6-5.
The Jets women’s team didn’t experience the same success as their male teammates.
In the first of their two back to back clashes with the Tigers, the match was a 28 goal extravaganza. However, the Jets were on the wrong side of the scoresheet, going down 16-12 against the UTS Balmain Tigers.
The Balmain women’s pre-season fitness shone through in the second match which saw them overcome the Jets home ground advantage to win 17-4.
